Having asked a question or two about a missing 'dll' file (Gear32PD.dll) in my own system and subsequently finding out myself what was causing this problem the following my just help someone.
It seems that this file is part of some OCR software packages that come with certain scanners. My own particular problem had shown itself when starting Photoshop CS - but I had it seems created the problem myself. To save time having just completed a clean reinstallation of XP Pro, I have my Photoshop Plugins folder (Which is by no means inconsiderable), in place where I keep Photoshop on another partition. To make Photoshop work again, a fresh installation was required to connect it back to the registry - but Photoshop did not over write all files that it installs itself - the principle file in question being the Twain file. The reason for this I can only imagine is that the installation does not overwrite this file because it assumes it to be factual and up to date.
The fact it that my Twain file carries the information on two scanners as I had been trying out various scanner drivers on my old installation. The errant scanner drives and software never came with any uninstall utility and so I had left it in place.
Now, in my new OS install, that unused scanner/Twain programme does not exist but the Twain file which I kept from my old Photoshop installation shows it as a possible twain resource and keeps looking for it.
My point to those that may get the 'Gear32PD.dll' file error is this:- Have you removed rather than uninstalled some old OCR software? - or maybe - whatever programme may keep looking for this file has not correctly recognised that the relevant OCR software has been uninstalled.
Just a thought!
