The soon to be released OSX 10.5 seems to have some useful features for page layout work.
1. Preview will allow you to add and subtract pages to pdfs. If you don’t have Acrobat, that will be handy. Preview will also allow you to do some markup and add notes for sending/reviewing docs with clients. Again handy if you don't have Acrobat or if your client has a Mac but not Acrobat.
2. Font Book will have auto activation of fonts. If you don’t use another font manager, this will cut down on some work and searching for fonts.
3. Font Book will allow you to print out previews, including all available glyphs. I assume that, if you print to pdf, you’ll be able to keep a handy reference to available glyphs on your hard drive.
4. Text Edit will open documents that you get in the new Word 2007 format (.docx) and .odf documents. If you’ve gotten one of these new .docx things, you know it’s a PITA since the only way to open the thing is to use the latest version of Apple’s Pages app. The only other thing you can do is ask the sender to save as an earlier Word version and resend.
5. Supposedly, you’ll be able to access your machine from any other mac over the internet – without Apple Remote Desktop. According to Apple: “Connect to any of your Mac computers at home from any Mac on the Internet. Your home computers appear in the shared section of the sidebar. Just click and you’re in.” Don’t know how this will work, but it could be handy when the client calls you on Saturday or at night with the “super important” change and the doc is sitting one your machine at the office.
