I know there are the simulated networking exercises available on CD from Cisco press and from various Internet sites, but do you really have to buy the Cisco networking equipment (and another PC) to be able to pass the CCNA exam. I've done a fair amount of research, and I have done some LAN and WAN stuff at university at a theoretical (not practical level). I bought the Cisco basics book to start things, even though I know a bit about the basics. Therefore do we really need to get our hands dirty, as I know instructor led certification courses are always very expensive here in Australia. Any opinions would be REALLY appreciated. Thanks Guys!!! John. PS; the Cisco networking certification route looks a lot less painfull than going for a MCSE.

A hands on is almost always a better bet with an intructor.. I say almost because of the cert mills that just take your money and spit out paper certs. A good instructor is worth more then money in knowledge that willbe transfered in just the normal conversation ebb and flow during a class. If formal classes are too much, shop around for a CCNP or CCIE who would like to moonlight as a private tutor. Dont take just anyone.. ask around and find one you are comfortable with.

I agree, fortunately, I have access to a regional cisco network academy so they can train students up to CCNA level (4 classes), and CCNP (4 classes). Instructor Led Training is great, but remember you have to bust your *** doing the work. The Instructor won't be in the exam room with you during the test, so you have to buckle down and just do the work outright.

Good Luck
