There are a lot of good ideas, but it needs something to pull it together. I'm thinking... Why don't you extend the dark blue down the left menu and the fadeout can continue fading to the end of the browser. Take off the top and left margins--take all margins off. And make sure to either curve or somehow connect the angle you will be making where the dark blue side background starts.

When that gets done, if you like the idea, I will check again and post more.

I had a big answer written and my browser decided to crasj for a while! Grrr!
I'm also building a sports site at the moment, i find these type of sites difficult. Anyway, i digress...

1024* IE6
1. Nice clean layout, good use of colour.
2. I'd add something to the left link table, maybe a border or something just to liven it up a bit.
3. The right table with the match reports, i'd match the blue there to the blue in the left link tables. i'd also add a tiny bit of passing around the text.
4. Achieve, should that be Archive? It's a broken link anyway. It also kind of gets lost there, should there be text or something underit to break it up a bit?
5. Links: the two links under the Links header, you need to add background colour or something to make it look like those links are actually part of the section, if u no what I mean?
6. On Club Information two points: I'd put the photo below that text table to keep the look consistent across the pages. Also the page is about Club Information so i'd take the information from the right column and bring it center page.
7. Fixtures, results & Stats, at the moment should only be called Player Stats unless you plan to build that section?
8. Make sure to include a copyright notice on the pages.

Looks great though, neat and professional!
