We have a Word document (created in Word XP) where all the footnotes have a line above them showing a one, a dot and a line, like this:

1._________________

This can't be selected, edited or deleted. Any idea what it is and how I can get rid of it? It appears before every group of footnotes and the number showing is always 1. It has me stumped!
