Hey all,

I have a user who recently started having trouble with inserting text in a footer in Word 2003. If he selects Filename from the menu what actually gets placed in the footer is a small box, then the work FILENAME and then another small box. Or if he chooses Page X of Y what gets entered into the footer is the word Page, then a small box, PAGE, another small box, the word Of, still another small box, NUMPAGES, and a final small box. I thought it might be a rights issue, but even when I grant him Administrator rights it still won't work. I can login under my name and it works fine. Any ideas on why this would start misbehaving? He hasn't installed any software on the workstation.

Thanks,

Joe Brouillette

Hi,

Select your boxes, Right-click on one of the boxes and select TOGGLE FIELD CODES

Hi Skip,

When I select a box and right-click on it Toggle Field Codes doesn't come up as an option. I get the following menu options:

Cut
Copy
Paste
Font...
Paragraph...
Bullets & Numbering...
Hyperlink...
Look Up...
Synonyms >
Translate

The boxes look like one of the "Unidentified Character" boxes that appears up when a file is opened in a program that can't read the file. <--FWIW.

Thanks,

Joe Brouillette

The keyboard shortcut for toggling field codes is:

Alt+F9 (hold down the Alt key while you hit the F9 key).

See if this makes things look a little better.

Have you already tried re-creating the Normal.dot file? If not...

1. Close Word
2. If you have any customizations in Word, rename the Normal.dot file to something like oldNormal.dot; otherwise, you can just delete it.
NOTE: In Windows XP, it is usually found at
C:\Documents and Settings\[YourUserName]\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

3. Open Word
4. Now, see if the header/footer acts property.

Hey dcompto, I think that did it! The footer text inserted correctly under my account, and now I'm waiting for my user to try it under his account.

Thanks,

Joe Brouillette

dcompto, it works under all accounts.

Thanks!
