Footer Issue in Word 2000

Hello,

I have a document I've set up for different odd and even pages for the entire document, so that the page numbers will appear in the left-hand corner for even pages and right-hand corner for odd pages. The document is 12 pages long, and the arrangement works fine for all but one page.

For some reason, page 3 has the page number on the left-hand side, the same as for the previous page. When I open the header/footer function, the page number for page 3 is in its correct place, but when I close the function, the page number is on the wrong side.

What's strange is that if I open the footer for page 3 and change the wording a bit (arbitrarily addding an x, for example), the x doesn't show up when I close the header/footer function and view page 3 in the print mode. That tells me that somehow the footer I'm seeing for page 3 when the header/footer function is open is different from the one I'm seeing when the function is closed.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bill

I don't know that this is the case for sure, but it's just a guess. Have you checked to be sure there is no space showing in the footer section where you are differentiating for 1,2,3,etc... such as somehow adding a space to your page 3?

Also, are you sure you didn't somehow place alignment formatting accidentally on the page 3 footer? I'm almost thinking this is the case.

Then again, I've seen some really odd things with all the Office apps in my experience. Partially, I think we come to expect too much in a way, knowing just how much these programs can do.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar enough with Word's header/footer advanced options to know whether I did either of the things you mentioned. Perhaps you could take me step by step through the process of checking out these points, especially the second one you mentioned.

I've placed a .zip file of the Word document on my website, in case you (or anyone else) wants to view it to see if you can tell what the problem is:

Thanks!

On your page 3 (odd page footer - section 4) you've got it linked to the previous section. The result is that the header and footer in the current - section 4 - section contain the same content as in the previous section.

I'm sorry, I can't provide a detailed fix but I checked the document using Word 2007. Its bee a long time since I used Word 2000 but I don't think that there have been significant changes in how headers/footers and sections work.

Cheers.

I tried unlinking it from the previous section, but that didn't seem to help. As before, when I view the footer using the header/footer function, the page number is correctly positioned, but when I close the header/footer function, the number is on the wrong side.

Worst case, I have a workaround: Before sending the document to a professional printer, I create a .pdf file. In Acrobat Professional, I can do simple editing, so I should be able to move the page number.

But I'm still curious about what's causing the problem. Any other ideas anyone?

Thanks!
Bill

Hmmm, I'm sorry I didn't have time to test it last night as it was really late. That was the one thing that stuck out at the time.

On looking at the document closer, when you open the footer view it appears that the last three lines of 3rd column "and their foresight in connecting us all to a lake as clear and beautiful as Big Thunder Lake." overflows onto the next page thereby pushing your page 2 over onto page 3 and messing up your real page 3.

Also some section brakes are "continuous" and some are "next page". Perhaps that is causing issues? Just suggestions to look at as I haven't had the time to really experiment with the document.

Cheers.
