Hi, using Quark 7.2 on a G5 1.8 running OS10.4.10.

I've always exported to pdf from Quark, ensuring fonts are selected (fonts are Type 1 postscript). Pdf is fine on screen and prints ok. When opened on a pc (running XP Pro with Reader 8) the fonts have been changed to some default serif face.

I'm not doing anything different I think - how can I ensure my fonts are embedded?

Any hints gratefully received...

...open the pdf in acrobat to check whether they have really been embedded...

...in acrobat, file > document properties > fonts, this will either show embedded or not..

...some font vendors don't allow embedding, there are ways around that but can take several steps using third party software or converting text to outlines...

Thanks Andrew,

have checked and all showing fine at my and end-user end, which is stumping me big time. In particular this is a legit version of Univers I've been using for years, that has only recently started to give problems (could this be XP interpretting something different?).

Just been on the phone to Quark who basically told me I'd have to install the exact same font on every pc going - this can't be right, though (I've just downloaded some brochure with some corporate font on fine) but if it is, does this mean the export to pdf is redundant?

I'll try using the print to .ps then distill that, but the simplicity of Quark's export has done me fine till now...

...is this being viewed via reader through a web browser on the end user machine, a large pdf too?

Andrew

only about 350k, so not massive.

My main concern is this is our corporate font and we have several hundred documents that are pdfs...

...a PDF file viewed in a browser, substitute fonts may be used
first to show the page quickly. After a while Reader will
finish downloading the font from PDF, and redisplay it with the
right font...

...this doesn't however seem to be your problem, it is possibly quark playing up, you can try trashing the 'jaws' folder from within quark 7 folder, restart quark so it gets rebuilt...

...personally, I always print to PS from quark as the Jaws implementation in Quark is not all it is cracked up to be, many users even now experience problems with it. In comparison to Indesign, Indesign is far better at direct export...

...if the PS file route doesn't work then try another font as a test, then perhaps find another fresh version of univers font to try out...

Hi bischerboy
I am running Quark 6.52 on iMac with OS 10.4.11.
When you choose export to PDF, you should see at the bottom OPTIONS click that and it brings up a menu, choose Job Options, that gives you the choice to embed or not to embed fonts.
Could that option have become unchecked?
I notice if I export to PDF without embedding Univers and open the PDF doc it looks OK until I close the font Univers then it goes to a default font.
Hope this helps IMacQuarker

Thanks IMQ,

slightly different on 7 as you have a whole lot more options (and the embed all/subset fonts has changed), thanks for your time though...
