Fonts: DOs and DON'Ts?

I think this is more a general discussion question, but as my particular interest is for VB apps, here goes...

Can anybody direct me to a page/link advising which fonts to use or not to use in text boxes, labels, etc.? I tend to choose my fonts intuitively but I know the end results leaves a lot to be desired. To give an example, I use the "comic times" font quite a bit because it seemed cute at the time(!), but I'm thinking of resetting the properties to Sans Serif... size 8? 10? 12? Why? Simply because priority number one has to be to make the reading as easy, clear ands painless as possible for the user. Or should I go for Arial? Times Roman?? Courier??? Courier is an old favourite of mine, but my colleagues tell me it's "boring and ugly". Really??

What might we consider the "industry-standard" fonts and sizes today? eg. in the Microsoft apps.

Well, any thoughts appreciated. I did try a search on this site and found some very interesting threads in the process, but no real direct answer to my question. I suspect that a lot of my doubts are also shared by web page designers.

I notice that I wrote my question in one font - looks like courier - but it now appears in a completely different font for the reader. And I also see a whole array of different fonts before me on these (marvellous) tek-tip pages.

By the way, in my post above, I forgot to ask if somebody can tell me what fonts are used in the caption and text of the standard VB message boxes. These are very clear to my eyes and I'm sure they weren't chosen randomly. And I notice we can NOT change their fonts.

Have you looked for fonts in Keyword search?, its been covered before as you can come unstuck on licencing with several fonts. In addition, don't fall into the hole of making your application looking fancy with Fonts, because unless your user has them on their PC, they won't see the "Pretty" form you made. Regards
