Hi all, time to ask those of you who have been using these things longer than me a question.

I am using css (css-virgin here) to do most of the stuff to make my site look pretty.

I would like to know what font you guys prefer for headers, which ones work well with italics as some looke rather poor.

Which ones should be avoided or are there any standard ones which are always available, and out of those which is best.

Basically which ones are a BadIdea(tm) to use and which ones are a GoodIdea(tm).

Thanks in advance, the ever-learning Karv.

Hi,

Good idea are the ones that the majourity of people have on their computers, bad idea are the rare ones that most people wont have!
After that its personal choice, what suits the content of your page, what look and feel are you going for?

Personally I dont even specify the font family that often, which is probably a bad idea but what the heck!

When I do I usually stick to types like Times, verdana, helvetica, Comic sans ms, courier etc

You should check up on what the W3C say about font types, worth reading.

I got bloody bored at the weekend:

Hi KarveR,

As Cian said, the first rule is to be pretty sure that you use the most common fonts for platforms like Windows, Mac and Unix (Linux...). Which means that, when you use the font attribute in css, you have to specify more than one font, for example:
P {
font-family : Verdana, Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
}

As you see, we took care of Mac and Linux users with the Helvetica font. The latest, sans-serif, is a generic family and you should ALWAYS use one as the latest choice. There are 5 generic families: Serif, Sans-Serif, cursive, fantasy and monospace.

Usually, in many books of web design they recommand to use a sans-serif font (i.e.: Arial) for headings and a serif font for the text (i.e.: Times). But it's also a matter of personnal preference ;->

Usability test also shows that many people like Verdana, as it makes long texts easier to read on screen.

I hope this helps a bit.

Cheers,

Xavier

Thanks starway, just what I needed ;-) ***************************************

My favorite font for web pages is Verdana, with Helvitica second. Tracy Dryden
