Some four years ago (back when I was on CS2 or 3), I came here seeking the solution to a problem in which the sizing arrows on the Text and Character palettes were grayed out, prohibiting their use—and, oddly—the ability to highlight the text within the field and use the ARROW KEYS to increase/decrease the font size. I can't stress that latter point enough, the ONLY way to adjust font size when the palette selectors are grayed out is by using the CMD+SHIFT+COMMA (or) PERIOD key combos or by manually typing in the desired point size.
I came across this thread (now closed):
After trying all those methods stated by Ekwoman, it was only after setting the Workspace back to its default did the problem cease to exist.
Now, onto the present: It's happened again. I restarted my machine and upon opening InDesign, lo-and-behold, the font sizing arrows are grayed out in the Control and Character palettes once again. I've tried all the previous, non-successful, tips AND the Workspace Reset (the new "default" in CS4 of which I now work in) with absolutely NO success. Nothing is returning that functionality.
Does anyone know 1) How to gain this very basic functionality back and 2) WHY does it happen in the first place?
