I have a problem with a serif font, Goudy Old Style ATT (by Miles Inc) using it in WordPerfect 9 on a new computer running under Windows XP Home edition. Most of the text is invisible but what shows is corrupted and misplaced. The text appears OK in the Reveal Code section, the document will print OK and can be opened OK in Microsoft Word and other text based programs on the new machine and also in WP 9 on my old computer running under Windows 98.
Is there any solution to this? Is an upgrade to version 11 or 12 likely to cure the problem? Other versions of the Goudy font appear OK in WP 9 but are not so elegant.
Thanks

You don't say what version of wp9 you are using. You need the latest patch installed to run it on winxp since wp9 came out before winxp.

See the FAQ about graphic image importing. Doing what it suggests might help. You can add a /fl or /dm=90 as a Startup Switch for wp but this probably won't help.

Many thanks for your prompt reply. My version of WP9 was an OEM copy supplied with my last computer so did not qualify for Corel support. Today a full copy of WP 11 was delivered and I loaded it and downloaded the Service Pack 2 - but it still produces the same result.
My computer has an AMD 64 processor so presumably the FAQ does not apply.
I am struggling to add the switches to WP 11. I have a desktop icon for WP 11 but I could not add anything to the . . . .\wpwin11.exe" part of the target. Please advise how I can do it.
I found another font with ATT as part of the name -Phyllis ATT - also provided by the same maker and this produced the same result. It may be something to do with the basic font structure and how Windows XP works with WP to display it.

Right click the icon and click Properties. Search wp's help for Startup or Switch and it will explain how to do it.

Even so, I don't that it will help. WP9 oem will have the problem that you describe. WP11 should be fine. Since you don't have a pentium then the hyperthreading issue that I explained in the FAQ may not help. Try changing the view mode from page to draft and such.

The draft view is the same as the normal view but WP 11 also offers a brwser view and this shows the text correctly.
I think I shall have to find a font to use instead of Goudy - it will be cheaper than investing in a new word processor.
Many thanks for your help - at least I now know how to call up old documents and view them properly using the browser.

After further enquries and help from Daniel Will-Harris I found a solution to the problem which seems to arise from the lack of provision of any kerning pairs in the misbehaving fonts.
If you have FontNav or some other software which sets out the properties of a font you can check if letter spacing is in any way controlled by specifying kerning pairs. If the answer is 0 or 'none'and a font is not displaying properly, try the following:
Place the cursor at the beginning of a section of text which does not display properly. Then go to Format - Typesetting - Word/Letter spacing and select 'percentage of optional' under the two options for letter spacing. It will probably read as 100%. Increase the value by 1% at a time and check the results each time. My problem disappeared at 102%.
I hope this may help anyone with a similar problem
