Font Display in dropdown

Have a strange Quark 6.5 problem. Running 10.3.9 on a PPC Mac Mini. Going to thfont menu, it only shows system fonts in the list.
Have reinstalled Quark, put the "right" fonts in all font folders except System (HD>LIB>FONTS, User>LIB>FONTS), but they don't show up....

Went in as different users, created new account, logged in as admin

We have other machines with same install with no problems

Any ideas?

...it is good practice to keep your system font folders clean as possible, dodgy fonts will cause havoc...

...in mac os x, fonts are stored in various locations that your applications will look at to load what it finds when you start up your programs...

...there is a great free font manager you can try...

...with fontexplorer, there is a tool built in that will clean out your font locations, leaving those that were installed by your system install...

...the font hierachy is as follows, it is good practice not to have duplicate fonts across the system, if there are they will be opened from the following locations in this order:

1. Library/Application Support
2. Users/[name]/Library/Fonts
3. Library/Fonts
4. Network/Library/Fonts
5. System/Library/Fonts
6. Classic Domain(Mac OS 9)/System Folder/Fonts

...be careful manually removing fonts from the System/Library/Fonts area, as essentila fonts are stored for system stability, best to leave well alone...

...just to add...

...with the adobe fonts:

/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts

Do not remove the folder called "Reqrd" and it's containing fonts, otherwise this will cause you problems...

...all other fonts in the "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts" can be removed or stored elsewhere.

...if you have multiple users on your machine, you will need an admin password to remove fonts from some areas...

Thanks for the font lesson.....I'm familiar with the font placement..

Problem is when I choose the fonts from the dropdown in Quark 6.5, they all do not show up.
All fonts are in the correct locations

...or use font book that came with the OS, although this is a slooooooow app to use at times...

scanman74, have you opened up the Font Book to look and see which fonts are opened or closed?
