In thread68-1491390 I described a problem when double clicking Office files. .doc, .xls etc... In that the application would open but would immediately fail with an error.

After doing lots of research and changing settings and re-installing Office several times without much success, I finally found out what the root of the problem is likely to be.

I found a few events in event viewer like the following:

Faulting application winword.exe, version xx.x.xxxx.x, faulting module [red]mso.dll[/red], version x.x.xxxx.x, fault address...
There were several errors for both Word, and Excel, I assume had this machine also been using Power Point it would have had a similar error.

I noticed the computer that was having the problem had an MSO file version 11.0.6360.0 or similar, while the machines without problems had a version 11.0.8221.0

Replacing the older version file with the newer one from another machine seems to have cleared the error.

MSO.dll file is located in
Code:
%SYSTEM%\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE11
This applies to Office 2003 as that is the version that was being troublesome in the computers.

It seems that, that particular version of the mso.dll file has some kind of issue. Once replaced everything seems to be working smoothly.

I'm not sure what the issue with the mso.dll file may be perhaps something to do with the on demand virus scan, I don't really know.

I'll update this thread should something else arise, but for now its a good, and simple solution to a very annoying problem. So i though I'd share it in case anybody else encounters similar problems when opening Office files.
