Guys, I work in an organization with multiple sites basically spread out throughout a city. I'm a newbe with replication so my question is do you have to create site links for replication to occur between sites. In other words, when I install a new domain controller, once it's placed in the appropriate site, is my job done in terms of replication? (There are two connections in the ntds settings object.) Would an administrator create a site link just to influence how replication occurs within the organziation but it's not a must do task? I just want to make sure I understand this aspect of replication. Thank you very much in advance.

Sitelinks will controll which domain controllers are used for replication to the new DC.

Thank you. But I don't have to creat a site link - correct? Is it correct in stating the KCC will determine the replication partners for this new domain controller? Thanks again. Could you give me a scenario for when you would create a site link with a specific domain controller - for example would stablility, etc come into the picture? Thanks again.

The KCC should figure it out. If you wanted to force replication between two sites do to crappy WAN links to other sites then you'd create the site link.
