I have a problem that Windows Media Player 11 is causing my GPO folder redirection not to work. When a user logs into a PC, the GPO redirects there desktop to a location on the server where there Icons are held. However, Windows Media Player 11 automatically adds it’s shortcut to the desktop first for each new user that logs in and prevents the folder redirection from being successful. A manual solution is to delete the Windows Media Player Icon each time and log off and back on and then the folder redirection works thereafter. However, I want an automated solution to this problem so that Windows Media Player doesn’t add it’s shortcut automatically. A lot of our users swap desks a lot and therefore this has become a real pain.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Did you try removing the Windows Media Player 11 desktop shortcut from the 'Default' profile? Just a suggestion.

this can be set via gpo in computer config/administrative templates/windows components/windows media player

prevent desktop shortcut creation - enabled
prevent quick launch toolbar shortcut creation - enabled (optional)

the trick is, this needs to apply BEFORE the folder redirection policy to get an immediate effect; aka, this policy should always be listed under the folder redirection policy at some point on the group policy tab when viewing linked policies. if you set it in the same policy, it may take 2-3 logons before redirection succeeds.
