folder permission issues - security tab hour glass

trying to give someone access to a folder on our windows 2003 file server, am finding that when I go to the security tab and add a user all I get is an hour glass, and it never allows them access.

weird thing is that I do not see anything in the event viewer, no indications of issues.

can someonme point me in the right direction here?

I believe I have found the issue.

when I look at the Security tab for that folder, SYSTEM has no settings with checkmarks, neither allowed or denied.

so now I need to resolve THAT issue.
