Recently noticed my SCO 5.0.6 File Server was outputting the following message on the console:

fnic:Abnormal interrupt! .....

Is this a setting issue or should I be concerned about my hard drive on the system? I seemed to notice this when I was running a Windows backup using a samba drive on the Unix system.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

you are probably flooding your ethernet card (fnic = ethernet driver)
check your switch or hub.
if it is a managed switch check the settings.

It is un-managed switch. I just replaced a 10 Mbps hub with a 10/100 Mbps switch to improve overall LAN performance. Should I consider replacing the network card on the Unix box?

short answer = yes
you could confirm by putting the old hub inline between the unix box and the switch and see if the problem continues, but most likely it is now a problem with nic or driver now that you are using it at 100Mb instead of 10. Typically if you have high network traffic you should go with a GOOD network card. it will save you a lot of headaches in the future. There is a reason some network cards cost $15 and others cost $150.

Thank you for your help. It makes me feel better knowing I do not have to rebuild my SCO Unix box this weekend.

I checked the nic card in the system and found it was a Linksys LNE100TX, according to the website it is a 10/100 card.

What would be a better card?

I agree 100% with Stan's assessment. I've had other Clients whose system performed poorly on a 10/100 hub, but worked fine (albeit throttled back a bit) by placing an old 10Mbit hub between.
Broadcom and Intel NIC's have been reliable in my experience. 3COM's too, but I haven't played with with those on any currenty systems.
Check SCO's Hardware Compatibility chart before making a purchase. There are some Broadcoms, for instance, that are NOT supported.

"Proof that there is intelligent life in Oregon. Well, Life anyway.

I decided to purchase another LNE100TX card to see what would happen. It worked just fine, I was able to perform a Microsoft Backup to a Samba drive without any of these errors:

fnic:Abnormal interrupt

I would like to thank those for their input and help.
