Hi,
Ive never come across this error message, on boot up, Floppy disk fail (40). My HD is recognized, as is my cdrom, then f1 to continue del for set up. Seeing as this a new HD and no OS is installed, hope you can see my delema.

Heres what ive done to now, Ive replaced the floppy drive with an other, changed the cable, set the bios to default, then tried manually chaging the boot drives ect....
All this still leaves to where I started.

Hmmm, Award modular bios v4.60 PGA, with an ASUS VA-503+ motherboard. This is an oldy but nonethless ive been given the task to fix this puppy, any suggestions....

Thanks
Steve

Floppy controller on M/B is active? Drive swapped isn't active? Floppy seek on POST active? Should get drive select light and drive seek on POST. Failure there can be cables misaligned, reversed, or bad. It can also be the FD controller bad. You possibly could cripple the onboard controller and add an ATIO card with everything except the FD controller shut off.
I have also seen failures where the floppy drive spun up but didn't engage the floppy. Plug a floppy in with the drive slot in a known position and see if it is moves before you take it out.
Could have power problem to the connector. Is it direct connect or adapter? Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Agreed, Ed. Seen this loads of times.

Error 40 means that the floppy cable is the wrong way around, or that the electronics of either the floppy unit or the disk controller on the motherboard have failed.

It's the equivalent of Error 80 for HDDs.

Hope this helps
