While typing in Word 97 (Win NT 4.0 w/64 MB RAM) the entire line on which I'm typing disappears for up to a few seconds and, eventually, reappears. Any clues as to what's happening and how I can make it stop.

We had someone who had a similar problem. The flickering text did not disappear for seconds, but it was quite noticeable. She used a view that displayed her text highly magnified and would most often see this problem when she was typing a long sentence near the bottom of a page. I believe it is a problem with Word 'thinking' between keystrokes because it occured in the same rhythym as the typing. I also think that auto-check for spelling and grammar might exacerbate the problem as they continually re-evaluate the sentence, though I never tested it.
Try changing the view and see if that helps. Secondarily, disabling the Grammar and Spell-as-you-go might also help.

might just turn off auto-replace; then make suer there are no more than 2 other apps running on the machine; between the two, this should greatly increase your chances of fixing the problem if it's a prob with the computer "thinking" for too long. (man; I still remember when it was normal for the line not to show up until I was about 4 words onto the next line....because the processor/program just couldn't keep up to my 64 GWPM pace, but then again, I can also remember programming in LOGO on an Apple 2e.....;)
-Robherc
robherc@netzero.net

*nix installation & program collector/reseller.
