Flexibility of TEXTAREAs

I've been set a task that I've a feeling is impossible without resporting to an applet, but I thought I'd toss it here and see if anyone else knows better.

I need to be able to insert text within a TEXTAREA form element at the current cursor position (ie not just a the end or beginning of the textarea). Is it possible (using client-side scripting)? <insert witticism here>
