Dude anyone who logs in with the priviledged access can do that.

the commands I used in my lab to do this were:

rename flash:vlan.dat flash:vlan.dat.renamed

then when I created a set of new vlans, I got a new vlan.dat file.

I would guess maybe you are looking at a switch that has had other duties in it's life and someone tried to save off the configs or maybe just wanted to start fresh without completely wiping them out.

I also rename config file while doing the recover password.

The IOS can create these .renamed files.

If you have express-setup enabled, and you press and hold the mode button. The switch renames the config and vlan files then reboots.

Exacty---just do a more...

switch#more flash:/config.text.renamed

and compare it to

switch#more flash:/config.text

Same with any other file that does not have the "d" in the mods (for directory). It does not support many more UNIX type commands like grep, cat, chmod, etc.

One more note---if you want to pipe for a grep, just use the "incl" keyword instead of grep.
