I don't know how you would insert your flash into powerpoint, but wouldn't it be simpler to create the whole slideshow in flash and export it as a projector file? That way all you need to do is run an executable on the target machine, you don't even need the plugin.
You can insert a Flash file into both Powerpoint 97 and 2000, but I've only done it in 2000 so I can't guarantee this works in 97.
Save your Flash file as SWF, making a note of the filename and exact path.
Open Powerpoint to the slide you want. From the view menu, select the Visual Basic toolbar. Click on the Control Toolbox (hammer and spanner icon).
In the new menu that appears, choose the hammer and spanner icon again, you will see a drop down list appear.
From this list, choose 'Shockwave Flash Object'. Release your mouse button to get a 'crosshair', with which you can draw a box on your screen.
The rectangle on your screen with the X in is where your Flash movie will appear, you can re-size it later.
Right click on the rectangle and choose Properties from the pop-up menu.
Make sure the Alphbetic tab is showing.
Change 'EmbedMovie' to True.
Set 'Loop' to false if you don't want your movie to loop.
Next to 'Movie', type the ABSOLUTE path of your SWF, i.e C:\mydocuments\movies\test1.swf
Close the properties box. Go to SlideShow, your Flash movie will now play. If you put the Flash movie on the Slide Master, it will animate on every slide.
This method does work, however, it is a bit long winded!
