flash drive resident antimalware app?

A while back someone suggested having, as part of your antimalware arsenal, some app that could be installed on a flash drive which could supposedly detect any spyware / malware on whatever computer the flash drive was plugged into. (I think the app was DOS-based, and it could work even if the system was severely compromised, although I'm not sure about those two points.) Could anybody tell me about this app? And would it detect a key logger?

I think, if I discerned your inquiry correctly, that what is meant is a BOOT-able USB stick, either DOS or Linux based, such as installing BartPE onto USB or using GRUB to boot several OSs with viral scanners (e.g. boot an ISO file of Avira Rescue System or Dr. Web LiveCD from the USB stick)...

I've run across CAINE (Computer Aided Investigative Environment). It can be used on USB or CD. This is more for forensics than malware detection though if you run CAINE from the CD/USB (instead of booting from the CD/USB) you have access to WinTaylor which has a lot of neat tools under one "roof," most of them from Systernals. You can use CAINE to recover data, too.

There is now another option: AVG Rescue CD which has an option for USB drives.
