Flash Buttons work (rollover) but won't let me make a link

Hi guys,

I created some buttons. Everything as far as that is concerned works fine: the rollover works; I have a slightly larger block in the "hit" key frame. Everything seems to be fine.

However, when I open actions to create a link for some of the buttons to other scenes and frames within the movie, the "on mouse event" is grayed out and won't let me select it. When I try typing or pasting the action (on (release) gotoAndPlay...) I get a popup box that says:

Clipboard Actions: Line 1: Mouse events are permitted only for button instances
on (release) {

Yet the Instance for the button shows its behaviour as a Button, and shows its option as Track as Button.

I'm LOST!!! I've read and watched the video for creating buttons several times, and everything is done right so far as I can tell.

HELP!!!!

hi,

Are you sure you open the object actions panel and not a frame actions panel?

To do this , rightclick on the button in the scene where you put it(a blue square appears around the button). Then go to actions. Now the "on mouse event" should be available.

Hope this helps you.

don't know if this makes a difference (I wouldn't know) but the button is actually text...there's no shapes or anything. Just text that changes color upon mouse over and clicks. Just can't get it to link.

Choose your button(left click) then look at the instance window, if you see the name of your button press ctrl+alt+a and you'll be able to choose an action for your button.

That doesn't make a difference. The blue square should appear around the text (if the layer isn't locked.
You have to be in the main scene where you have put the button. Don't double click on it to go to the timeline of the button itself.
Let me know if it doesn't work.

Goaganesha, that's what I've been doing. Still no go! Funny thing is if I try to do the same thing with a button I've created that ISN'T text, only a shape, the On Mouse Event selection is available. Just not with the buttons that have text.

I have just tried it myself and I have no problems.
Perhaps you should make a new movie to test this.
Here's what i did:

type a text
take the black arrow tool
click in the frame where you just put the text
text is now selected (blue square)
press F8 and select button, than ok
right-click on the text in the main scene
select actions
go to basic actions and doubleclick on the on mouse event

You're right, that works for me too. It just doesn't work in the movie I've already spent tons of time on!!! :( Guess I'll have to start that part over again as I have NO idea how to fix it!

Thanks for your time!

Rex

Did you lock all the other layers before????

I think the problem is your not selecting your button???

I might be wrong but!!! Worth the try (instead of doing it all over again)

Have Fun...

You guys ROCK. Guess you're right...I was THINKING I was clicking on the frame/button itself, but it seems that I've either been clicking on the entire set of frames OR right clicking on the key frame INSIDE the time line instead of clicking on the keyframe with the button, the right cicking on the button itself and choosing actions.

Thanks to you both!!!!!!!

Rex

When you choose a mc, a button or whatever always click on the thing itself not on the timeline nor on the keyframe ;-)
Have Fun...
