has anyone create a VM from flash archive in VMware (esx3.5)

I listed a similar in the forum for esx but I got nothing. so I thought I would try here.

I have flash archives of solaris vm hosts, I want to rebuild a host from archive, but at first try I seem to have an issue with the dhcp portion initiation. in the x86 world it relies on a dhcp connection, im well familiar with this process in the physical x86 hardware world, but I have not got it going on the virtual side. even though I have not really tried too hard yet, I thought I would throw out this inquiry first.

basically, I created a generic vm on the esx host based off of solaris, retrieved the mac address for the network adapter, plugged the mac address into dhcp, verified it was there correctly.

configured my jumpstart server accordingly to install from flash archive, which entails setting all the necessary files and finally running add_install_client. (this portion is way common)

when I go back to the vm, boot it, and wait for it to be caught by dhcp, it does not, this part does not work.

The only unknown I do not know is the network adapter type to plug into sysidcfg file for network interface (needless to say this is critical, and maybe my issue), im thinking e1000 since that is what vmware referenced, but that did not work. so this is where I just gave up and went on to more important duties.

anyways, im guessing not too many people have done flash archives on a virtual machines, but I can only hope :)

How did you configure your ESX guest's network adapter? Is it bridged or NAT?

If you snoop from your Jumpstart server, do you see the client requesting an IP address?

Annihilannic.

ill have to check, I have not tried that. let you know wht I find..

thanks
