Flakey link corrupting AD

We have a regional office that is having serious connection issues that apparently is corrupting the ad schemea. It seems to be up and down like a yo yo 24/7 and there is no possibility to upgrade at the moment. They have a DC at the office and we are thinking demoting it and setting them up on a separate domain. Before that is there any way to keep them part of the forest and prevent AD corruption?
