My hubbie got new computer. He installed win98 first, then decided to install xp instead, then removed hdd from old computer and put it in new. I've got xp to recognise both hdd ok (neither one nfts), but I don't know how to get xp to recognise all programs, settings etc on the old drive. Hope someone can help

It won't - most apps will have to be reinstalled in the new installation (because the install process writes system files and registry entries - these won't be present in new install for existing programs). You can try (some are standalone, will just run) - just use explorer to find the executable in the Program Files folder on the old drive and double click.
