Sorry to ask in the Apache Forum, but it may be appropriate.

I want to fit a farm of servers with a "lightweight" / "efficient" / "fit-for-purpose" httpd server for purposes of serving video files as a content distribution network.

This is to avoid all the modules and architecture overhead in Apache (and to avoid trying to recompile a thin version of Apache).

Any product suggestions for Linux?

I'm not to hip on this my man but I just did a google for "streaming video server" and came up with a few resources. You bring up a very good point. I guess the standard web server would tend to have a lot of overhead that isn't needed for this case.
