First web page opens slow in IE

I have tried different home pages but all open slow. Once the page has loaded and I go to another web page it opens almost immediately. Also and I don't know if this is just another symptom but shortcuts created from the Favorites list will not open unless the first webpage has loaded.

Any help would be appreciated

This sounds a little odd. My first guess is some spyware. Have a go through a few of:
