Hey all. Lots of stupid questions here but please stay with me. I just received my CCNA in June. I have had limited experience with routers. I am configuring a frame relay system with (1) 2611 and (3) 1720's. All sites have to connect up to the server at the 2611 site.(Interconnection between offices not required but may be at some point) Do you guys have any sugg and/or tips pitfalls etc to watch out for. I have all the DLCI numbers but am just needing a push from an "expert" on the best way to do this. The big problem is that I am shipping these routers from Texas to New Jersey and will not have the privilege of "trial and error" set up. They want to plug them up right out of the box and get them to work. Any help will be much appreciated because I am kind of ball of stress right now.
Thanks

Get yourself a length of cat5 cabling and build a T1 cross over cable.. 1 to 5, 2-4 on each end. Get the main router and configure it with the correct subinterfaces and IPs. Get one of the remotes and configure it then connect the two via the CSU/DSUs with the new crossover cable ( the exact building is the serial port FAQ here) DOnt forget to enable clocking and let it rip.

You could do mostly the same with a serial crossover cable made from a V.35 DTE and DCE hooked together. It just would not test the CSU part.

When you are done testing, remove the clocking ( most COs provide it) and make the ports are not in the shutdown mode. Dont forget to make a copy of the config for each. It would be nice if you could set these up with modems on the AUX port or extra serial port for dialup.

I think I hit the highlights but I've been up for too many hours today and if someone else would be so kind to check my writing today :)

Having a modem on the AUX port is invaluable to test for things like power outages or downing the router remotely without losing connection. Another very very very useful scenario is a problem you cannot figure out, and thus you have to call Cisco. You can just let them dial into the router.

Thanks guys. I finally received the correct WICS today and I am in the process of setting the "lab" up. I will definetly configure the AUX port so that will alleviate some stress. Thanks for the tips and I will see how it goes!@!!

Never ever leave home without a known good modem!!!!!
The 2611 build a serial interface.
add these commands

int ser 0
encapsulation frame-relay
frame-relay type-ansi

and then add sun-interface int ser 0.1
frame-relay interface-dlci xx IETF
Ip Address

int ser 0.2
int ser 0.3

This is just a rough idea, however I hope it helps.
note be aware of the bandwidth on each T1
you may have to add this statement

service-module T1 timeslot 1-8 <---512k example. Jeter@LasVegas.com

Hey,

I just decided to write you cuz i think we both are in the same boat....i recently got my ccna and having to work on 34 branches and reset the wan links with new routers all across...sometime it's kinda scary, but also pretty cool and exciting...when it works.... :)and as you know requires a lot of researh.... just thought to write you cuz i know exactly how you feel....it's different in real world than taking the exam...

good luck!

Guys thanks for all your tips and words of encouragement. I set everything up like suggested and it worked!! Had a little trouble with Router rip for the PC's to talk to each other so i ended up doing a static route and I can't believe that something actually works. Thanks again!!

Enjoyed this thread! I've just ordered up 4 T-1's with Qwest and have 4 1720's on the way!! This will be my first time also! Thanks for the Crossover info. I think I've seen that before, somewhere!!
