I am making a 50 page brochure for a friend & I really dont do print to much (web designer). I have seen the master page although I dont know what it means.I like the way freehand laysout the pages and you can see them as thumbnails, I believe ID2 has the same features. What tips can you guys tell me for production or tips so I avoid mistakes. Thanks guys this is gonna be a tough one & I need all the help I can get.

The manual is pretty descriptive about how master pages work and how to set them up and edit them.

Random comments in a forum are a bad way to start out with InDesign. Check out for excellent tutorials that you can download as PDF and MOV files.

Tips? Coming from a web design background helps to understand that a document is really composed of several subordinate, linked files. Beyond that, understanding color printing options (CMYK vs. spot), transparency, resolution, etc. is critical to good (if not decent) printed page design. I would seek out an introductory class or book to print design and publishing. There is a good section at 'about.com' regarding the keywords 'desktop publishing'.

I have done print before & I know about 300dpi for print, spot colors, overlays, etc. I was looking for production tips with ID2. Like telling someone to create & run an action in photoshop. Thanks for the replies & I guess I just need to buy a book or sing up on lynda.com.

Go to File>new
instead of 1 page put in 50,
>Facing pages on
>ok

Then go to Window>pages this will bring up the thumbnail view you were looking for.

Double click on the master pages. Put anything you want to appear on every page on the master pages, like running heads, folios etc etc
Type doesn't go on the master pages.

Check out the help menu for more...
and I think InDesign comes with Tutorials (not sure, never used them).
