Although perhaps not ideal, would there be any problems installing a new domain where the first server is 2008 and subsequent DCs are 2003?

Is a domain "2008" or "2003" or is the core AD the same but some features are not available?

Cheers

I could only imagine the issues with that! If your going to have a 2008 DC, then all other DC's should be the same.

Bah - rubbish

Keep one thing in mind when you have mixed DCs - you can only use features that they all have in common if you want to work across your enterprise.

I'd recommend that they be all the same - especially when you're creating a new domain. But it's certainly not a requirement.

What DCs you can run depends on the domain and forst functional levels. When you build a new forest and 2008 is your first domain controller the levels are set at:

Domain functional level - windows 2000 native

Forest functional level -windows 2000

Using these levels you can have Windows 2000, 2003 and 2008 domain controllers in the mix.

If you had 2003 and 2008 domain controllers you could then raise these levels to Windows 2003. Here is a link desribing the features of each level;

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?

pagy is absolutely correct. There's no problem at all as long as you keep the domain and forest functional levels at 2003 or lower.
