This is my first day at work as a dba. Boy! I am hearing it from the experienced ones.
Only can save face for me.
I was asked to log on to Oracle to perform some query.
When I tried logging on, I was receiving tns: protocol adapter error. This is because I was logging in as system/manager since no user has been created for me.
When I contacted one of my guys, I was asked to figure out what was wrong and create my own user.
You will forever be my hero if you can help me here.
I do not want to stick it to anyone but I will like to have a good start.
Thanks in advance.

Can you check if the listener is up?

log-in as oracle user and then perform,

lsnrctl stat

I don't think your immediate problem has anything to do with a password.
TNS:protocol Adapter Error is a network problem.

I think I would start by taking a peek at the tnsnames.ora file and see what tns alias have been defined. Once you have decided on which alias is the appropriate one (e.g., my_instance), you might try
sqlplus system/manager@my_instance
and see if that helps. Hopefully it will at least change the error message.
Until you get
ERROR:
ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
you don't need to worry about the password.

Thanks rcurva and carps for always caring!
Here is what I think is the tnsnames.ora:
# TNSNAMES.ORA Network Configuration File: D:\oracle\ora81\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
# Generated by Oracle configuration tools.

w21t.mon.edu =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = huffer.ws.mon.edu)(PORT = 1521))
)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = w21t.mon.edu)
)
)

I have not seen one like this before.
So I tried system/manager@w21t.mon.edu but to no avail

I'd check whether there is a valid entry for huffer.ws.mon.edu in your hosts file ( should be in winnt/system32/drivers/etc for windows NT )then check if you can ping this IP address and then gradually move along the connection process checking each element. SOL

Thanks SpiritOfLennon!
I did just that but each element is coming up as bad ip address.
I will just go over to the guy and say this is not the best way to ensure job security.
