How can I check the firmware version of an AIX server? I know that I can run 'lscfg -vp | grep -p Platform', but this doesn't work on all of my platforms or AIX versions.

Unfortunately it's dependant on the hardware. If you go to then there's documentation for each firmware item compete with how to determine current level.

Also helpful is to download the firmware update CD from the same site which has some useful utilities.

You also might want to look at invscout.

The two commands that come to mind are:
lscfg -vp|grep alterable
lsmcode
Older systems and older vertions of aix will not give good results because aix is not aware of the firmware level so for those use the above links / documentation.
If the level is not available from aix they will tell you how to find it - if it is upgradable / alterable.
You may need to use the sms or bump menus on older systems so you will need to check them next time you reboot those systems.
You should also consider the device firmware, disks, adapters, tape drives, scsi controllers and backplanes, etc.
The easiest wey to start is to cut a copy of the microcode discovery CD, it will checkout the system for you but it does not handle SSA so check the SSA support site for firmware and driver / fileset updates.
