Hi,
I tried to upgrade firmware on 570 through HMC using FTP repository and it failed. When I called IBM they said HMC is not able to pull the file from the FTP server because of a firewall and recommended to do it with a CD.I'm sure it is not a firewall issue as I can FTP to other servers.Did anyone upgrade using FTP repository? And also what measuresshould I take before upgrading using CD.

thx

The others server you ftp to are they on your network or outside ................

For ftp, I believe you need to download the upgrade ZIP file. (never upgraded like that myself). For CD, it is safest to download the ISO file and burn it on a CD-R (not CD-RW) e.g with nero or some other CD-burning software that supports ISO files. Get the ISO file here:

Depending on what firmware you currently have, and what version/release you are going to, it may be a disruptive upgrade - the LIC upgrade wizard will tell you. So be prepared for a full system shutdown.

Also, you will probably need to upgrade your HMC first. Latest firmware level needs your HMC to be at level V5R1.0
SF230_xxx needs HMC V4R5.0 . Be aware that for upgrading your HMC from a V4 to V5, you need to get recovery-DVDs because it entails a re-install of the HMC. Also: don't forget to do a save upgrade data and a backup critical console data on the HMC before you run that upgrade. HMC V5R1.0 also comes with a mandatory fix MH00507 which must be applied to the HMC after upgrading to V5R1.0 !

I went from SF225_096 to SF235_185 using ISO-burnt CD-R. No problem occurred on that operation. Ran for about one hour.

There is a bug in the HMC code (or was it the p570 firmware) that breaks the FTP way of upgrade. IBM admitted that to me.
