Fireworks 4: How to create a drop shadow

Ok, i am feeling stupid but i can't get it to work. Here is what i am doing that doesn't work.

1. I click on the image and i get a thin blue line around so i know i selected it.
2. I go to the effects tab - i choose "shadow and glow" then i choose "drop shadow"
3. i leave the setting in their default state and then click outside the effects area - but i get no drop shadow.

What am i doing wrong?

If the image fills the canvas then the drop shadow will fall outside the boundaries of the canvas and therefore will not appear. Click Modify --> Canvas --> Fit Canvas and everything should be OK.

If you are talking about a small image within a large canvas, I'm not sure what the problem is.
