Hi,
Why is it good to have a firewall on my personal home PC?
What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Thanks,
Jenny

Hi Jenny,

Firewall, is basically something that blocks intruders from entering your computer. There are a software firewall and a hardware firewall. Software firewall is basically installs on your computer which block access from incoming ports such as ZoneAlarm and many other firewall software. For example if you are using windows 98, ME, or any window operating system, you are indanger of people crashing your computer and getting information from your computer. I heard that they can abuse the netbios port of your computer to crash it, if you are using any of the windows 9x. They can get information from the windows 2000 and nt series. They uses something call a port scan, which scans all the ports in your computer and see if your computer have any open ports...for example 21 is usually for ftp, 23 for telnet and 80 for http. A hardware firewall is a device that blocks the ports using a hardware device like a cisco pix firewall.

The Advantage of firewall is that it blocks intruder from crashing your computer, getting information and hacking your computer with Denial of Service attacks.

The Disadvantage of firewall is that it slows your computer down.

After having firewall isntall you should test it out by going to and go to tools, port scan.

if you have any other questions, free feel to ask.

Thanks,
Hui

Hi,
Thank for the info. boys!

Will having a firewall interupt my napster connection?
Will it have an affect when I upload my website?
Will it interupt icq (chat programs)?
Does it take up a lot of space?

Questions, questions, questions.

Thanks,
Jenny

Hi Jenny

Some firewall does interrupt outgoing connections...for example zonealarm, when ever a connection is going out, it will ask if you want to allow this program to go out. So if you click yes and yes...you will have no problem.

Will having a firewall interupt my napster connection?
Yes, depending on the setting...for example, if you set a simple firewall that only blocks incoming connections...like a router that acts like a firewall, you have nothing to fear. but whenever a connection from outside coming in, it will block...you have to open up that port via router, or configiration in the software.

Will it have an affect when I upload my website?
When you upload files to your website that a connection going out...so if you allow it to connect outside you have no problem.

Will it interupt icq (chat programs)?
ICQ, depend what you are doing, sending a file, you need to let it use outgoing connection. But when someone send a message to you, you first have to connection to icq server, so the connection is made, therefore it will not affect you.

Does it take up a lot of space?
Zonealarm doesn't that much space, router firewall (hardware) doesn't take any space and other like cisco pix firewall.

Zonealarm is really good, and it's free for personal use...just make sure you set the configuration correctly.

There is also something call a Proxy Server...which is something liek a firewall too, this acts to check if you have more than one computer going out to use the internet connection. What a proxy server does is that it logs which computer is trying to access which site. It can also filter out sites, which prevent people from access sites that are prohibited by you. A router firewall only allows incoming connection to be blocked. Where as Pix firewall is similar to proxy but it does check at the ip stage where it checks every bit of information coming through.

If you have anymore questions feel free to ask :)

also if someone is sending you a file, it will be blocked, since the firewall prevent connections being made from the other side, you have to turn on the port.....whatever icq port is using...

one helpful command is : netstat -a

this shows you a list of whatever connection is being made by your computer with the ports...i'm not sure if 98 have it but i am sure nt and windows 2000 have this.

Everything is configuredable, if you have a tougher rule set, harder chance hackers can break in......

rule set is a set of guidelines where the firewall obeys, it's like the configuration in zonealarm. :)

:)

thanks,

Hello Jenny --

I just read this thread, and everything that these folks have been telling you is exactly correct. I just wanted to insert one extra thought about ZoneAlarm --

It all sounds sort of daunting when you're reading this, but when it comes to easy setup, ZoneAlarm is really really really easy to set up and integrates quickly into your system (by clicking boxes to allow access, as htin11 stated), and there's also a box to tell it to remember that choice next time --

Poof, you will never have to tell it for that program again. Just wanted to make sure you realize how EASY it is to set it up, because I started getting nervous reading all the posts. ;-)

Within a few hours of being installed on your computer under regular everyday use, ZoneAlarm will be completely integrated and you won't even notice that it's there. Just the little icon on the taskbar reminding you that you are protected.

good luck! :)
