Having a problem with 2 Windows 2003 R2 servers having their firewalls turned on after receiving and rebooting from MS updates. As there were over 40 updates installed, I am having problems narrowing down which one(s) was the cause. This has only happened recently and only with servers set to auto update from Microsoft. Any help is appreciated.

The way we manage this is

1. Auto-update is turned OFF for all servers
2. All patches and updates are TESTED FIRST!
3. We have our own internal WSUS server for patch management, so we can roll out our tested patches to all clients and servers.

This might have helped prevent this in your case. Another thing you can try is to have the windows firewall service disabled as part of global policy.

Good luck,

Make sure your servers have a GPO as lhuegele states: have the windows firewall service disabled as part of global policy.
