I am very new to linux and I have just installed ubuntu on my PC. I am trying to turn the box into a router/firewall. Can anyone recommend some good software to use. I would like something that can do rate limiting.

Thanks in advance

I asked a similar question recently and was given the link for Smoothwall.

It is designed to run as a minimal linux install on it's own device. I do not yet know if it is possible to use it on an existing linux install or not. I may just use an old PC and dedicate it to the purpose.

At my age I still learn something new every day, but I forget two others.

All software you find will be wrappers for ipfilters (kernel's firewall), ipchains and route (kernel's routing tools). You can then install a DNS and have a fully functioning switch.

These three programs are part of the OS, and thus should already be install on your Linux box. That said, there are graphical front end applications that make dealing with the configuration a lot easier.
