We have a Win 2K Server, which has a DSL (USB) modem. This connection is shared through ICS.

Does anybody have any good recommendations about a firewall for this?
I tried zonealarm, but this seems to struggle with the ICS.

I am currently trying SolidShare ( This seems excellent, but I am not sure how secure it is.

Does anybody else use this firewall?
If not what firewall programs do you recommend?? James Goodman

For small networks I have used Linksys router for DHCP and Firewall. I just have the certain ports directed to my servers. I haven't had anyproblems so far. I think it's very inexpensive way of implementing security.

From what I've heard, one of the best ways to go is the Linux firewall.. Supposed to be very secure and strong.. Matt Wray

I would have to agree with seong76 the linksys router is a good firewall for a small company. If you have the budget I would recomend one of the Cisco PIX boxes they work very well.

If you have a USB modem those routers don't work for you because they only have support for 10Base-T Port wan connections. I think you must replace your modem with the more common Ethernet-type first, then you will be able to use hardware firewalls/routers to protect your network.

I have got just the firewall for you...

Its called Smoothwall... its a linux based system.. there is a commercial version that you can buy for £125.00 or a free version which you can download..

It works with USB or Ethernet ADSL and Leased Line Routers.. and can provide 3 seperate networks which includes a DMZ and allows port fowarding.

It now also has intrusion detection... a module for VPN's... a net nanny block list, and they are just introducing live monitoring..

I have installed loads of these on old pc's min spec p75 with 16mb of ram.. I also put them on new boxes that support USB and scsi...

The really cool thing is that you can take an image file of the system when its setup and keep it on floppy.. If the system every really goes wrong you can have it re-installed within 10 mins...

Hope it helps....

Cheers

Matt

p.s no i don't work for them.. but the company I work for are a re-seller for them.

good luck..

If you want to go down the Linux route you might also want to check out SME Server 5.1 which is a cut down version of Red Hat Linux.

I have it installed on an old 486 with 64mb RAM it runs FTP if you want or just a gateway/firewall or just an internal server. I've had 5 workstations connecting to the net via this (cable 512kb/s) with no problems and i believe it is very secure. It's very easy to setup using the basics, good for Linux newbies like myself.
