firewall recommendation for WIN ME 1

Hey all,

I was hoping to use Zonealarm for a friend's PC, however, when I arrived, I realized that this machine is Windows ME.
I know, I know...don't start the razzing...hey it certainly isnt my choice.
Anyway, it doesnt appear that Zonealarm supports ME, and I was wondering whether someone has experience/recommendation of a free software based firewall that does support ME?
Or can someone say that they have successfully used a version of Zonealarm on ME? If a free one is not available, I would also consider an inexpensive ($30 or less)one.

Any guidance in this regard is much appreciated.

From a quick look at the ZoneLabs site Windows ME was supported pre v6.5.

Excellent info tazuk.
DO you have pre-6.5 releases that you (or anyone here) would recommend over others? Stability far more important than features at this point.

I'd hesitate to make any recommendations myself - I've been running ZoneAlarm since it's first release but never really had any major issues (bar the one below). The few minor issues I've hit have always been solvable by reading the ZoneLabs forums.

Aside from my own machines, I'd guestimate that I've installed ZA in various forms on at least 25 other machines belonging to friends and family over the years, and recommended it to many more. So far no-one's come back to me with ZA-related problems (cue phone ringing lol).

The only thing I have noticed is that every major release (eg 5.5 to 6.0) it's worthwhile doing a clean install rather than upgrade. I failed to do this once with my desktop (Pro version) and had major networking issues until I removed and reinstalled.

Check my response to ZoneAlarm on Win ME entitled,

"ZoneAlarm Action Unacceptable!"

It's my opinion that you and your customer would be wise to go for the free version and DON'T trust the purchased one.
