i have just been hired against my will to make a firewall, but i have no experience making one and have no idea where to start. do i watch the sockets for incoming IPs? or do i watch the modem connection or what? im shooting in the dark and any example code would be incredibly appreciated! thanx, Cyprus. Hi Cyprus,
There is no reason to frustrate you but these are exactly the questions that contain the know-how of Companies like symantec......

My personal opinon is: Buy an Firewall. That will be cheaper for you and your company compared to a new development.

you are probably right, and that's exactly what I would do, but thats not what my employer would do. he wants a firewall from me and i want my job. Thanks for the suggestion tho, and your perfectly right. but i kinda like this job. :) Cyprus

Hmm, my first stop would be to places like Security Focus ( ) and see what kind of things a firewall is supposed to do and how people bypass it. Then I would design the system with the kind of security that firewalls are must have instead of should have. I really can't give you any other details than that.
