Hi..

Just would like some advice as to which version of Interbase to go for. I have done some development using the original opensource release of Interbase, but now Im ready to try implement a commercial database - would like to make the right first choice. Borland or Firebird ?

Given that I do not want to have to worry about buying licenses and spending unnecessary money for the actual database, it looks like Firebird may be the best choice.

Firebird AFAIK is still open source - yet is well supported and still being improved by the Firebird community. Borland (after its initial release) has closed opensource development and gone in a different direction with its commercial version.

It would seem to me that on first glance I should use the Firebird version, as it seems at least as robust as the initial release of Interbase and is still Opensource. Also, it is well supported by 3rd party tools.

Finally, Given that I already have some projects written in the original version of interbase - am I going to have trouble in converting them to Firebirds version (or is any actual conversion even necessary.)

Thanks..

Hi,

When using Firebird 1.0, you hardly will run into problems.

If you want to drop license fees, Firebird is the way to go.

If you want SMP support, system tables for performance monitoring etc, InterBase 7(.1) should be a good choice. It's all up to you.

Firebird 1.5 is very promissing as well though, make sure to take a look!

Ok Martijn - thanks for that. Think I will go towards Firebird.

Cheers..
