Using MS Project 2007.

Can Project calculate the Finish date for a task based on the current % complete entered?

For example. If a task is scheduled to be completed today but is only 50% complete, can project calculate the completion date where the percent complete indication would show on schedule but the task completion would extend out?

The baseline would show where the task should have completed. I would like to see Project readjust the schedule and determine a new finish date for the tasks and the project based on the % completes and all the Predecessors within the project.

Thanks,
Ray

No.

Assume a task with 20 days Duration and 4 days Work. At the end of the first week, I report that 75% of the work is done. There is no way for Project to know if the remainder of the work will be performed at the same level of effort.

Indeed, the reality is that work effort is not constant throughout any task's duration. For those who wish to go to this level, Project allows you to choose different work profiles. After you assign a resource, you can change the work Contour for that resource on that project.

Again, assume a task of 20 days duration and a total of 30 days Work with 2 resources. Resource 1 may be flat loaded while resource two is late peak. A %WorkComplete of 50% on the task will not accurately update each individual's Actual Work or, conversely, 50% WorkComplete by the flag loaded resource will occur at one stage in the task but 50% WorkComplete by a late peak resource will occur later in the task.

In short, while your request is "doable" in a somewhat general case, when the specifics are examined, it poses some non-trivial considerations.

I suggest that you look at writing some VBA code that handles your general case and ignores the more challenging elements.

You will, of course, want to consider how to handle items such as an early/late start of a task, the status date of the information (i.e., you learned on Friday that a task was 25% done; but you didn't post until Monday so you need to be able to apply the 25% to the work using a Status Date of Friday) among the various factors your coding will have to process.
