Hey everyone,
I just installed my first VPN Phones with Juniper SSG5.
Everything seems to have gone pretty good, but today I got
a call from my customer asking if we could fine tune voice
quality on the VPN phones.

Can anyone help me with BEST PRACTICE for VPN Phone Extension settings?

I only have 3 VPN phones, all have the VPN Client installed.

I have IP500 running 4.2.14 Thank You All

The best sound will be with G711
G729 compresses and will sound a little as a tin can

But iptelephony isn't so great because it sounds so good, no it is so great because of all the features you get
Iptelephony sounds always a little less good then TDM
They have to get used by that

We usually run the VPN phones at 729 and they sound pretty good. In past experiences 711 over the WAN can have some issues. Dont leave them at auto. thats when they adjust themselves and you can notice it in the beginning of the call.

Yes...yes... I remember that setting in Manager somewhere. "Use low voice quality", I believe it is set to on by default. Find that and deselect it?

Why do people think that the Internet is a proper vehicle for high quality voice traffic? Perhaps we can contact Al Gore as the creator of the Internet and ask him to fine tune the customer's connection which should improve voice quality.

Forgive my cynicism, it's Saturday and I've just spent the better part of a week dealing with such inane questions.

Use G.729 over low bandwidth connections for best voice quality. (yes anything less than LAN speed should be considered a low bandwidth)

Thanks for the input I will Change my settings.

I did have Auto select for compression mode.

But for H450 support I have QSIG or H450 as my 2 options
besides none. What is best practice for this option.

Hi mate,

G711 (64k) is definately the way to go, other than this i dont really think there is anything else on the handset that can be changed to improve call quality, it may be worth checking to see if you can prioritise H323 traffic on your router, or some other form of QOS mechanism.
