Hi. Hope this <?> is posted in the right place. I am trying to run an NNTP virtual server (using WIN2K and IIS 5.0) but whenever I try to start the NNTP it says "only one instance of each socket address ( protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted" and it refuses to start. IS there anyway to find out what in the world is using port 119? When I "hook up" to the NNTP server (wiothout my vs running) Whatever is running shoots me this error:
502 You have no permission to talk {},john Goodbye
I found what was using the port, it was a program called dnews.. it took me a while to localize and eradicate this. Surely there must be an easier way to tell what ports are doing what!
John Vogel
john@computerwiz.net
<a href=If you are interested in working on a very worthwhile Christian web project, please email me at
There are various port scanners that you can use as SysAdmin to see what is in use and by what, most of the security sites will list these for other security reasons, but they come in handy for most of any port diagnosis, I happen to use PortScannerPro....
You could try... (bear in mind that not all the best "security" sites are the most "ethical" ones..! (This statement, by means reflects on any of the sites listed in this post)
