Finding unused switch ports

Hi,

My organisation has around 300 switches spread over several sites. I'm asked every now and again to remove patch cables from ports which aren't being used - what quite often happens is that staff move buildings but their data patches are left in place. At the moment the best way we have of doing this is by manual cable testing using a fluke.

I was wondering if there is a way I can remotely connect to a switch and cable test for say a pc turned off, but connected to a port? I know we can login as look at packets transmit\received counters, but at the moment the only time period I have to go by is the last reset (in some cases years)?

I'm looking for a method of remote testing to find unused ports so I can send bod over and say remove ports x,y,z, etc.

I'm just curios how other users tackle this problem and if there is a way to reset switch counters with a time\date stamp (preferrably without reseting the switch).

thanks in advance

kulm

ps - anyone know why I have to create a new user account every several months - otherwise I'm faced with "there is problem with your login,... please contact management"
At which point a form is offered, but there is never any contact from the form!
