Hi,

I know that on a Cisco PIX running IOS 6.1 you can type in 'show ver' and the serial number for the unit will come up.

I tried that with our Cisco 3640 but no such luck. We're running version 11.2(18)P.

Any ideas on how to get the serial number without looking on the back of the unit?

I'm not sure if this will get it or not, but I believe "show diag" gives serial numbers for the network modules and may give if for the chassis as well.

I gave it a shot but it doesn't give a serial number for the chassis. Thanks though.

Tried that too. Didn't work. Thanks.

The chassis serial number is the processor board ID listed in sh ver.

cisco 7204VXR (NPE300) processor (revision D) with 122880K/40960K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID 2126xxxx <---------- serial number
R7000 CPU at 262Mhz, Implementation 39, Rev 1.0, 256KB L2, 2048KB L3 Cache
4 slot VXR midplane, Version 2.0

The processor board ID is not the serial number of the chassis. A 720X usually has a serial number
that starts w/ a '7'.
