I recently purchased the BS450 switch and I can't get past the 'enter password' screen in hyperterminal. I've tried the Ctrl+C process, "NetICs", "secure", and "user" with no luck. I'm trying to connect via JDM, but I don't have the IP address that was originally set on the switch. Is there anything I can do to get around this that won't cost anything.

One trick I often use to find an IP address is to plug my laptop into the device and reboot the device. It should send out an ARP for its own IP address (if it gets a response it knows there is an address conflict.)

It doesn't always work but works often enough to try... on a 450 switch you'll have to assume that the port you're plugging into is in the management VLAN, you may want to try a couple different ports.

There are several other ways to try to recover this password. Stacking it as a non-master with other switches is probably the most popular - you can search this forum for more, results usually depend on how old the hardware is since Nortel changed the recovery procedure. When I had these switches new I called Nortel to get a password generated based on the Serial number and MAC address once - it worked but you'd have to consider the cost given the age of this hardware.
